How to Use Your EquuSound Sizing Gauge

While this simple process can be accomplished by yourself, some horse owners may find it helpful to ask a friend for assistance. Also, you may find it useful to have a flashlight and/or mounting block to ensure an accurate measurement. We recommend you double check your measurements three times to ensure accuracy.

Step 1: Measure 1 1/2 Inches up From Base of Ear

  • Insert the depth gauge into the width gauge and set to the 1/2" mark.
  • Set the tip of the depth gauge at the base of the ear opening.
  • Be sure the width gauge is level across the ear, meaning each side of the width gauge is the same distance from the base of the ear opening.
  • Holding the width gauge at an angle will result in an inaccurate measurement.
  • You may leave the depth gauge in place while taking your width measurement or remove it as long as you are able to keep the width gauge at the correct height from the base of the ear opening.

Step 2: Measure the Width

  • Ensure the horse's ear is seated into the large oval shaped notch.
  • This is an inside measure of your horse's ear. Gently set the triangle notches against the other side of the ear. Find the measurement where the gauge first touches the inside of the ear. See the picture with the green line. This horse correctly measures 1 5/8". Be sure to not measure to the outside of the ear or include the thickness of the ear in your measurement.
  • Do not squeeze the horse's ear, this will result in a small measurement.

Step 3: Measure 1 1/2 Inches up From Base of Ear

  • Insert the depth gauge into the width gauge and set to the 1/2" mark.
  • Set the tip of the depth gauge at the base of the ear opening.
  • Be sure the width gauge is level across the ear, meaning each side of the width gauge is the same distance from the base of the ear opening.
  • Holding the width gauge at an angle will result in an inaccurate measurement.

Step 4: Measure the Depth

  • Place your finger at the 1 1/2" mark on your horse's ear.
  • Rotate your gauge and insert horizontally into the deepest pocket in the back of the ear, while keeping the width gauge flush with the front of the ear.
  • Gently adjust the depth gauge until it contacts the deepest pocket in the back of the ear.
  • Ensure width gauge is flush with the front of the ear.

Step 5: Read the Depth Measurement

  • Gently remove the ear gauge from the ear without allowing the width gauge to slide or move on the depth gauge.
  • Read the measurement on the depth gauge from the inside of the width gauge, not the outside, as shown in the picture.

Step 5: Repeat Steps 1-4 For the Other Ear

  • Important: Even on the same horse, both ears may not measure the same. Measure both ears to receive the most accurate sized ear keys.
  • Note that in the pictures, which is the same horse, the widths are the same; however, the depth measurements are different.
  • After completing your measurements follow the QR code on the provided sheet or visit Standard Collection to place your order.
  • Keep your EquuSound Sizing Gauge to help with the key fitting step.
  • Afterwards feel free to share your gauges with friends/family.
